my "vacation"

So today starts my "summer vacation." I'm on vacation for the next week and it is going to be WILD!

My vacation includes these:
The Move

and a little of this:
The Move

a lot of this:
The Move

don't forget this:
The Move

Yeah, you're jealous.

Seriously though, it's weird. This whole packing up our lives thing. It's sad. It's exciting. It's a whole lot of emotions. It is also getting empty. And the walls are getting bare. And the number of boxes full of our worldly possessions is growing.

PS: I really wish I could hire someone to do the packing for me. And that they could be really good at it and be super organized and OCD. Otherwise, I will do it myself. Do you think Martha is available for hire? She's the only person I could trust.

PPS: I am looking forward to my mom coming this afternoon to help me pack...she is bringing Sprinkles Cupcakes to celebrate John's birthday!

**Anyone have any good packing/moving tips? Any and all are greatly appreciated!

  1. Obviously, you are going to have stuff (mostly in the kitchen) that you need until the end, and that you will want to unpack first. Take time to think about what needs to go in those last boxes and label them so you know to open those first. I typically end up doing that for my "must haves" in each room or section of the house.

I also try to easily label my batteries, light bulbs, etc..that I will need to get things in order so that I don't have as many trips to the store when I am unpacking.

  2. Congrats on the move! Victoria is a really cute town (had a golf tournament there once). I have moved 7 times in the last 5 years and the best advice that I can give is to label your boxes really well. I typed up lists of what was in every box, then attached a copy to each box and kept a "master list" for myself. Very helpful.

  3. Moving is such an exciting, tiring and adventurous time! My advice is to get the large rolls of saran wrap at Home Depot or Lowes (in the packing section) and wrap all of your furniture really well... like 10 times around really tight!! It has preserved all of our furniture and after moving 4 times in 3 years, we have never had a single ding! Good luck with the packing!

  4. good luck with all the packing... it's definitely not my favorite past time, but it's a good chance to get organized and throw stuff away that you don't need anymore!

  5. My one piece of advice is to pack china/dishes on end rather than a normal stack in the cupboard. It helps prevent breakage. Also, liquor stores are great for getting free boxes that are really strong (plus they go through a lot so they always want to get rid of them). When we moved to Texas we didn't have anything break and we used almost all liquor boxes. As a side note, you may have to change this strategy if you will be having your new church help you move in! :)

  6. My best advice is to drink. Heavily. It will make the entire process more palatable. (Just kidding... sort of!)

We have moved 7 times since we got married, and had each of our 3 kids in a different place, so I have so "been there". There are few ways to make it enjoyable, so my best advice is just to be laid back. It's all just "stuff", and 99% of it is totally replaceable. Pack that 1% of stuff really carefully, carry your photos in your own car with you, and enjoy. You're "making memories!!" :-)
